When Caliber Electric came to us, Google was telling them the same thing it tells a lot of small businesses: their campaigns were “limited by budget.” The obvious answer, the one Google practically hands you, is to spend more. We didn’t buy it.

Caliber is a family-owned electrical company serving Southwest Florida. They do the work right, they show up when they say they will, and they had a Google Ads account that wasn’t keeping up with them. Our job was to figure out why.

The Real Problem Wasn’t Budget

We dug into the impression share data, and here’s what we found: about half of Caliber’s lost impressions weren’t lost because of budget at all. They were lost to Ad Rank. That’s a Quality Score problem, not a spending problem.

Ad Rank is how Google decides where your ad shows up and what you pay per click. It factors in your bid, yes, but also the quality and relevance of your ad and, critically, the landing page it sends people to. Caliber’s ads were sending every click, whether someone searched “emergency electrician” or “panel upgrade near me,” to the same generic services page. Google saw that as a poor match. So did the people clicking.

When your landing page doesn’t match what someone searched for, two things happen. Your Quality Score drops, which tanks your Ad Rank, which means you either pay more per click or you don’t show up at all. And even when people do click, they bounce because they landed somewhere that didn’t answer their question. You lose twice.

What We Actually Did

The fix wasn’t complicated, but it took real work. Here’s what we changed:

We didn’t touch the budget. That wasn’t the lever we needed to pull.

What Happened When We Did It Right

Caliber’s Quality Scores improved. Ad Rank improved. The same budget started winning more of the impressions that were there all along, impressions we were losing for free before. The clicks that came through were more qualified because the person searching for “emergency electrician in Cape Coral” landed on a page about exactly that.

The result: around $100 per booked lead. Not clicks, not form fills that go nowhere. Booked jobs. That’s the number that matters for a family-owned electrical company in Southwest Florida.

The Lesson Here Is Simple

Google is always going to suggest you spend more. Sometimes that’s the right move. But before you increase a budget, you have to know whether the money you’re already spending is working. In Caliber’s case, it wasn’t, and the fix was structural, not financial.

Spending smarter beats spending more almost every time. That’s not a tagline. It’s just what the data shows when you actually look at it.
